Maple Bacon Breakfast Strata
Ingredients
2 tbl. butter
10 slices Pane Turano, sliced in half, crust removed
1 lb. smoked ham, ½” dice
2 cups mozzarella, shredded
2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
2 cups skim milk
2 cups heavy cream
1 tsp. vanilla extract
8 eggs
Maple bacon Topping:
¼ lb. bacon, cooked, diced
¼ cup pure maple syrup
Directions
Grease 9”x13” casserole with cold butter.
Shingle 1/3 of the bread to line the bottom of the pan.
Spread half of the diced ham over the bread.
Spread half of each cheese over the top of the ham.
Repeat steps 2-4.
Cover dish with remaining bread.
Mix together eggs, milk and cream.
Pour mixture evenly over the entire casserole.
Cover with foil and let stand at room temperature for one hour (or overnight in the refrigerator) so that liquid is absorbed.
Preheat oven to 375*F.
Bake for one hour, covered.
Remove foil, evenly coat the top with maple bacon topping, then return to the oven and bake another 15 minutes, or until bubbling (assure that the internal temperature reaches at least 160*F.
Let rest 10-15 minutes before serving.
Maple Bacon Topping:
In a sauce pan, combine cooked bacon with maple syrup, bring to a simmer over medium-low heat.
Cook 5 minutes or until maple syrup is reduced by half.
